Welcome to Amsterdam
Amsterdam, the Venice of the North, with its picturesque canals – which are on the UNESCO World Heritage list – lined by tall and narrow typical 17th-century buildings was once a small fishing village that became an important commercial port during the Dutch Golden Age due to Holland’s thriving trade.
Amsterdam has managed to keep that small-town feeling, with markets (Albert Kuyp), the Jordaan district – arguably the home of the ‘true Amsterdammer’, its old squares, monuments and classic buildings now housing hotels.
Amsterdam has a rich cultural life and a wide range of entertainment, night clubs abound and the music scene is diverse and attracts many famous artists from all corners of the world. The city is home to a wealth of important museums, such as the Van Gogh Museum, the Rijksmuseum, Anne Frank House.
Shopping is wonderful with luxury department stores (Bijenkorf) as well as streets with designer and trendy shops (PC Hooftstraat), quaint little antique stores, flower stalls along the canals and bustling markets.
This is the city of bicycles and cycling is a great way to get around here. There are many bike rental shops around, and the traffic is adjusted to cyclers so it’s easy to go for a ride. Alternatively, take a tour on one of the canal boats, touristy yes, but also a great way to see the city.
The food ranges from traditional simple Dutch fare in a brown café to innovative fine dining. On a beautiful day, do as the locals do and have a beer and nuts on a small terrace along the canals while watching the home boats bobbing up and down and flowers being sold on the corner of a bridge.
Amsterdam feels like home no matter where you are from.

The house where Rembrandt lived between 1639 and 1658 is a now a museum, meticulously refurnished with pieces of art, furniture and other pieces from the 17th century and of course many of Rembrandt’s works including an almost complete set of etchings. The house can clearly be seen on a bird’s eye view map dating from 1625. It is a substantial two-storey dwelling house with a stepped gable. In about 1627-28 the house was drastically remodelled. It was given a new façade, a triangular corniced pediment and another storey was added. The reconstruction was probably overseen by Jacob van Campen, who was later to make his name as the architect of Amsterdam Town Hall (now the Royal Palace on Dam Square).
