With over four thousand active producers and as the world’s largest wine country in terms of cultivation area, Spain is today recognised to be among the top three countries worldwide, along with France and Italy, for its viticulture and wine exports.
With its undulating landscape draped with vines, from green valleys to rocky hills, the often harsh climate resulting in flavour packed grapes, Spain is an amazing country to explore for wine lovers. Wine making and consumption is in its heritage, it is a staple of Spanish culture, it is deeply ingrained in the Spanish lifestyle, going back to the Phoenicians around 800 BC. Passing on knowledge from generation to generation has allowed for a unique wine culture which is part of the country’s history, a symbol of hospitality, a reason to come together – just think of that other Spanish icon; tapas, which paired with a glass of local wine make for an unforgettable culinary experience.
All the above and of course their full-bodied, mineral packed characteristics account for the unique charm of Spanish wine.
We have been working with wine since 2016 through our e-commerce platform with Sweden as our home market.
Since we started in Spain we have seen a wave of new producers and some of the best wines ever produced appear on the market. When we look at the monopoly market in Sweden we see that Italy with 38%, France with 19% and Spain with 11% are the three biggest sellers of wine in the country.
We believe together with many of the leading international wine critics that Spain is the most interesting wine producing country right now. Sweden’s retail monopoly Systembolaget’s latest sales statistics for the first two quarters of 2024 show that wines in the price category of +100 SEK – Swedish Krona (at the current time of writing this article 88€) whilst Spain is the fastest-growing with 33,6% increase in sales.
The country has long been known for its Crianza, Reserva and Gran Reserva age classification, but in the last few years has seen a wave of new producers skipping these classifications in favour of emphasising the more exact location and the terroir, whilst turning to more authentic, unique offerings, often through much simpler winemaking. The result has been lighter, more transparent wines that take the term ‘terroir driven’ to the next level, premium wines with a focus on drinkability – some of the best wines we’ve seen from Spain.
“Spain stands atop the world of premium wine with a laser focus on drinkability and gastronomic consonance.” James Suckling, Wine Critic
It goes without saying that you don’t want to stop drinking your old tried-and-true reserva favourite, but finding your way in the incredibly varied new Spanish wine world can be challenging even for the most experienced at-home expert.
With our new initiative Try Spanish we want to give more wine lovers the possibility to discover, buy and try wines from both the new revolutionary wave of producers and also the classic bodegas that are constantly improving their bestsellers. With Try Spanish! we want to make it easier to find the new gems and at the same time present classic wines that may be difficult to get hold of, or wines that are produced in such small volumes that they never make it to the shelves in the shops outside Spain. Smaller productions are rare to find especially in the Nordic countries’ monopoly stores where great consumer demand always requires large volumes.
To be able to offer best wines at best price we are creating a Spanish distribution platform where we can receive a large number of wines from several producers and transport directly without middle hands to Sweden in the most cost-effective, environmentally friendly and sustainable way possible. At the same time, we are creating a digital meeting place where producers can communicate their message with consumers through video wine tastings and personal invitations to wineries and events.
Mixed wine boxes from all the most popular wine regions with the best of new and classic Spain will be created together with our local experts. They will be available to order online for home delivery in Sweden to start with. The launch in all of Scandinavia and more countries in continental Europe is planned.
We believe and hope that our new Spanish wine initiative Try Spanish! will take you as a wine lover on an inspiring and exciting journey through Spain’s new fantastic wine world.
